Every beautiful home deserves to be graced with a beautiful antique table within their formal dinning rooms. Can’t you just imagine all of the treasured family holidays unfolding around your gorgeous antique table? If not for the beauty, then maybe you are interested in an antique table for the structure or size. It is sometimes very hard to find the right furniture that not only goes along with the decor of your home, it is sometimes very hard to find the right size that you need for your room.

But, finding an antique table can also pose a problem if you don’t know where to look. First, you should look to purchase an antique table locally. You will want to have the opportunity to take a good look at what you are considering buying. You want to make sure that the table is still in good condition. A quality antique table will have all of its joints intact and even through the years of its use, a well made table will still be sturdy. Obviously, and signs of wear and tear will reduce the price of the table.

Look it over really well to make sure that there are no cracks in the wood and that the wood is not overly dry or warped. The underside of the table can tell you things about it as well. Is there any markings printed on it that might indicate that it is an antique reproduction? Are there any signs that the table has been repaired?

Some local places that you would be able to find antique tables are antique shops. Antique shops have a habit of pricing their items a little bit higher then some other sources of antique tables but, if you purchase an antique table from an antique shop you are more likely to purchase an item that is in better condition. You can also try shopping at thrift stores for an antique table.

You will be able to save a lot of money but, it would really be up to you to determine whether the find was really a true antique or not. You can also try your luck at local garage sale or estate sales. Again, it would be up to you to be knowledgeable enough to know whether the piece you found is an antique or not but, usually this is where the bargains can really be found. Online is a real asset to finding an antique table as well. Websites like Craigslist will put you in touch with people in your area that are selling an antique table. Plus, Ebay has an option on their site that allows buyer to look for items that are within a certain distance from their home.

If you are looking for an antique table to use for functionality rather then for profit, you will be able to acquire a real bargain if you find a table that needs a little work done. Sometimes the table you find are in really bad shape but potential lies underneath. You can either take it to be refinished or do the work yourself. Sometimes it takes time to go through all of the layers of old paint to find the beautiful wood underneath but, once you do find it, you find the real treasure.

When you are antique hunting you need to know how to find the value of a piece of antique furniture that you are looking to buy. The bottom line is that the person who is trying to sell you this particular item is out to make a profit. There are those who have no problem with trying to sell you a piece of furniture for less then what it is worth. The only way you will know if you are getting a good price is if you are knowledgeable about what you are buying.

The easiest way to try to determine the value of an antique piece of furniture is to do research about antique furniture. Learn to tell the difference between Queen Anne and Tudor. In your research you will learn to tell the difference between antique European furniture and antique furniture from America. You will also learn the eras in which the pieces come from and therefore you will be able to determine the age of the piece. But, this kind of information is only half the battle. Sometimes reproductions can look so authentic that you will need a trained eye to tell the difference. But, don’t worry; there are a few little tricks that every good antique furniture hunter should know if they are going to find a bargain.

First off, examine your find to ensure that you are looking at a quality item. Look the piece over to see if the drawers open and close with ease, the doors are secured tightly to the hinges and that there is no obvious sign of damage like pieces missing, cracks, etc. You will also want to make sure that the piece of furniture you are considering buying is structurally sound.

Have there been any repairs done to the piece such as refinishing? Does the piece still consist of all of the original wood? Obviously if you are considering purchasing a piece of furniture that is over one-hundred years old, there will be some evidence of wear and tear. But, you want to make sure that the item is not going to fall apart the first time someone sits on it. Because of all of the wear and tear that a one-hundred year old piece of furniture goes through, the edges on it should be fairly smooth.

If you are finding rough edges on the piece as you run your hands along it, it is possible that the piece is not as old as you think it is. Also, you should look closely at the finish of the piece. Is it clean and is the color still vibrant? Things like that are evidence that the craftsmanship of the item was very high. But, keep in mind that older veneer is thicker than and not as even as the veneers you see on furniture today.

In addition to considering the pieces quality and condition, ask yourself if the piece of antique furniture you are thinking of investing in would be considered rare and in demand. If you are looking to purchase antiques to sell for profit, what would be the point of spending money on a high quality, rare item in great condition that nobody wants to buy from you?

Antique china can be very valuable depending on its age and design. Patterns that are considered to be rare are highly sought after and are therefore worth more. Some of the more common patterns tend to saturate the market and therefore may fetch as high a dollar amount. But, when you are looking to invest in antique china, the task can get complicated if you do not know what you are looking for. There are some ways to determine the value of china.

The first way to determine the value of antique china is to do research about china before you start investing in it. Learn which types of china are sought after from which dynasty and what kinds of patterns to look for. While you are shopping for your antique china you will need to examine each piece of china that you are thinking of buying to determine its worth.

There are several things you should be looking for. First you should examine the china with a magnifying glass. Look to see if there are any noticeable chips, cracks, scratches, discolorations or other blemishes. These imperfections will be important factors in its worth and will be used in its appraisal. While it is easy to see chips and cracks in the china with your naked eye, it can sometimes be much harder to see where the china has been repaired in the past.

One thing that some antique hunters have resorted to carrying around for this particular reason is a back light. Using a black light reveals things that you wouldn’t be able to see in our normal range of spectrum light. But, under the black light, these well-done repairs become obvious. All you need to do is take the piece of china that you are interested in purchasing into a dark room. If the china has any cracks that have been repaired in the past you will be able to see them with the black light. Plus, the newer paints applied to modern day china will glow under black light as well. This gives you another great way to verify its past. Each flaw that the china contains will decrease its value.

Beyond its condition, you will also have to be able to identify the age of the china. To do this you need to locate the piece’s mark or emblem. This is usually it is found on the bottom of the china. If you are lucky there may even be a production year. This is very important information in determining its value. Dating the item accurately may sometimes be a way to tell you that the antique china you are interested in investing in is a reproduction and not actually an antique. By learning all about antique china you are making this task easier.

It is possible for you to become a wonderful antique china hunter. All you need to learn all you can about your craft in order to find true bargains. There are those in this world that would be very willing to sell you an antique piece of china that is not really an antique if you let them.

Finding different kinds of antique desks for sale can be challenging especially if you don’t know very much about antique desks. The thing that lures people to purchase an antique desk is that antique desks offer more then just functionality to a space. They bring elegance and beauty to a home as well.

Once so popular it was commonly referred to as simply “a secretary”, the secretary desk is one antique desk that is sought after by many antique hunters. It has a hidden workspace behind a piece of flat wood that usually sits on an angle when it’s closed. This can be as much as a forty-five degree angle. These sometimes tall and quite heavy desks can also be quite large. The more modern reproductions tend to be much smaller than the ones that were made over a hundred years ago.

Newer secretary desks are built to be easily taken apart unlike the antique ones that were built solidly as a single piece of furniture meant to stay together for hundreds of years. Normally there are also wide drawers on a secretary desk, and sometimes small drawers and small cubbies on it as well. This is to allow storage for a variety of different items.

Another type of desk that is highly sought after by antique hunters is the rolltop desk. Like the secretary desk, the rolltop desk also has a hidden workspace. But, the cover of the rolltop desk rolls up into the desk itself. A secretary desk needs to have the items removed off of the top of it for it to close. The rolltop desk on the other hand, can close around the items that are on top of the desk.

Another very classic type of antique desk are the old, large wooden desks. These types of desks usually have a flat front. The front of the desk can also be curved. Whether the desk is flat or curved, they are usually carved and very elaborate. Because of their fancier appearance then secretary or rolltop desks, they typically sell for thousands of dollars.

Desks that were made over a hundred years ago were made with the idea of manual work in mind. That is very unlike the desks that are made today where cable wires for computers are a concern. When you are considering purchasing an antique desk, you have to decide what function it will have in your life.

If you are planning to purchase an antique desk to use in your home rather then for profit, you will have an easier time finding what you are looking for. A desk that is bought to use can come with a few imperfections. The main thing to look for is that the desk is sturdy, the joints are solid and that all of the drawers open and close easily and are without damage.

Since antique desks lack the proper function to contain today’s technology like a computer, the main purpose to purchase one for your home is because it gives a classic look to a room. If you want a traditional feel on your office or to your home, then these kinds of antique desks are a must-have for you.

Antiques are a smart, fun and fulfilling investment and antique hunting is a great way to spend your time. Whether you are purchasing antiques for decorative purposes or for profit, antiques are terrific assets that last for centuries. Antiques are collected for many different reasons depending on the person who is collecting them.

Some antique collectors just have a passion for history. They like to understand and to know why a particular object was used, how it was used or who used it. They are fascinated by the obvious ways that the world and technology has changed and grown. By collecting objects from the past they feel like they are partially connected to a period of time in which they never lived, is long gone but somehow still survived.

Some people collect antiques for the challenge. They get a thrill out exploring what can be found at any given thrift store, garage sale or estate sale. They test themselves in being able to find the best bargains and the rarest items. Both of which are key elements to being successful in the antiques trade.

Meanwhile, other antique hunters simply invest in antiques for the profit. They see a market that they are somehow able to fill. While I don’t think that there is anyone out there that can’t deal with antiques and not be fascinated by its history and the thrill of the hunt, some antique dealers focus more on the dollars and cents of the trade. These people are the salesmen (and women). They know how to purchase an item and successfully sell that item for a profit. The best antique hunters are all three of these types of people combined.

People look for many different kinds of antique objects. Some of the more popular items to collect are pottery and china, furniture, and glassware. But anything that is over one-hundred years old is considered an antique meaning that almost anything can be collected. While anything can be collected as an antique, it does not always mean that there is a market in which to resell the item for profit. If there is no demand for the item, the chances that you will see a profit from it are slim. However if you are less interested in making a profit and more interested in your own enjoyment, then anything can be an antique.

People collect things like books, keys, coin, cars and toys among many other things. The key is to know your market. If you are interested in collecting toys you really need to know what kinds of toys are worth investing in and which ones are rare. You also need to learn how to tell the difference between imitation toys and the real thing. An imitation Barbie doll will not be able to generate as much of a profit as a genuine doll would.

The world of antiques is an amazing and fun way to spend your time. With a little know how, anyone can make this pastime into a money making hobby or a full time career.

Antique books are bough for several different reasons. Some people love the way that antique books add to the elegance of a home. Others invest in books to resell for profit. Some people set out to collect a particular set of books like those in a particular genre or author or period of time.

Antique books contain a glimpse into the past. It is amazing to see the early procedures and techniques from a technical book from the past. What about being able to read history not from what is actually written o the pages of a book but, from the way and the style it is written in.

Antique books are delicate and need to be protected from humidity and moisture. They should also be protected from wear and tear as well. Things like creased or ripped pages or warping can bring down the price of the books. Antique books should always be treated carefully and with respect to their age. They need to be kept on a flat, smooth shelf that will adequately be able to support their weight.

Some books are quite large and can weight a great deal. Books that are already considered antique because they are already over one-hundred years old or books that are on their way to becoming antique should never be in contact with unsealed wood. Unsealed wood can release acidic vapors that could damage the book. They should also be stored out of the guides the sun to prevent fading.

It is not uncommon for antique book collectors to pay as much as two-thousand dollars some publications but the price of the book is determined in many different ways. The price of antique books usually depends on how rare they are as well as their condition.

The rarer the books are, the higher the price. How popular the book is also adds to its value. For instance, an antique copy of the classic novel Gone with the Wind would fetch a greater price then a lesser known book. Another thing that will greatly determine the price of an antique book is if it is signed or initialed by the author. That is one reason why book signings are so popular. With a simple inscription from the author raises the value of any book. Another thing that determines the cost of an antique book is not only what the book is and who it is but, the original ownership of the book is significant as well.

Antique book collectors look to dealers to find the antique books that they are eager to purchase. They also shop things like thrift stores, flea markets, garage sale and estate sales. Some collectors look for those books that are not antique yet but are on their way. They know that with the continued proper care these books will soon be able to offer them a significant profit from what the original book cost. Books to look for are 1st editions, books that are in or are close to mint condition or those that are signed or inscribed by a well-known figure in the day.
